Estella Williams

Canton, Ohio

hello!

I am Estella.

Since I was only five years old, I have wanted to become a doctor; and taking college classes as a high school student is giving me the opportunity to explore challenging courses on a college campus that I could never experience in a high school – courses such as 3 semesters of Anatomy & Physiology (with cadaver labs), Medical Terminology, Human Disease, Ethics, and more. In fact, because I am a highly ambitious, self-motivated, passionate learner who is taking a full course-load of college courses during my junior and senior years of high school, I will earn an Associate Degree in Science before I even have a high school diploma in my hand. My plan is to become a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) specializing in finding answers and diagnoses for people suffering from unexplained medical issues . I aim to use my talents and skills to improve the lives of others and to change the world for good…and I am excited to do exactly that.

Author & Celiac Coach

At the age of 15, I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease after three years of experiencing increasingly worsening symptoms. While my diagnosis was a shock, knowing the problem (and more importantly – the solution) put me in the driver’s seat to get myself healthy again…and that was empowering! But it is downright difficult to be “gluten free” when you’re a teenager or young adult with a lot of big plans. That’s why I decided to become a certified Celiac Coach – so I can help other people navigate the challenges of celiac disease and gluten intolerance without losing out on all of the amazing, adventurous bold, exciting, (and tasty) experiences this world has to offer. I created my website and video program to serve as a valuable resource, and I wrote and published a book on Amazon: “How to Have a Gluten-Free Social Life: Tips, tricks, facts, and pointers to help you avoid gluten without sacrificing everything else.”

Leadership & Volunteer

Experiences

My leadership and volunteer experiences have allowed me to use my talents and interests to help others; and in turn, those very same people helped me to understand how truly gratifying it is to be part of the solution.

Writing Samples

My teachers and professors have often raved about my writing skills.
Here are samples of a few essays and research projects I have recently written so you can judge for yourself.

"Wrapped in a blanket on our porch, with Coco resting her heavy head on my leg, I hear the crickets singing in the fields around us. They sound exactly the same as they would have sounded 110 years ago on a different porch just a few miles from here. My tea has gone cold, but my heart is warm with pride. I am proud to be the descendant of such an extraordinary woman who was courageous, fierce, cunning, and independent. Although we’re separated by the span of more than a century, I feel deeply connected to her, knowing that she was the catalyst who made my nationality my destiny."
"In the dancing golden flames of the fire, I looked closely at my marble. The undulations and bubbles in the aquamarine glass – perfect imperfections – caught the light, causing it to glow from within in a way that seemed almost magical. I tucked it away in my pocket as a reminder of that special night at Camp Wakonda and of Pastor Ben’s inspiring message."
"Celiac disease (also called 'coeliac disease') is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system creates anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies to attack particles of gluten – a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye – which it identifies as 'foreign invaders.' These antibodies ultimately damage the villi – the finger-like projections lining the bowel that absorb vitamins and nutrients – leading to a variety of health concerns, including malabsorption/malnutrition, digestive tract cancers such as small-intestinal adenocarcinomas and enteropathy-associated T-cell Lymphoma (EATL), Multiple Sclerosis (MS), dementia, and infertility among many others."
"With the endless and overwhelming possibilities of words, getting started was always my biggest challenge. In the past, I would practically write an entire essay in my mind before I would put the words in writing. I erroneously believed that the only way to know if I was going in the right direction was to get all the way to the finish line before I would actually begin. The pressure of writing an entire essay in my mind – of having to mentally re-work and remember and edit – was absolutely paralyzing."

Activities

I’ve always followed my heart in a quest to experience as much of the world as I can and to make the world a better place, one day at a time. Doing so has led me on a fascinating ride filled with enriching cultural performances, nail-biting competitions, engaging academic experiences, soul-searching explorations, life-changing moments, uplifting relationships, and memories that will last a lifetime. My experiences and talents are a mixed bag of Arts, sports, academics, church, travels, and unique skills. I’m not your average kid, and I’m okay with that because those unusual experiences, skills, and talents are what make me “me.”
